Contemporary British-Jewish literature by women – and about women – forms a chorus of diverse voices that all resonate with the talmudic tradition of argument. The Talmud, often referred to simply as „the Book”, is a compilation of Jewish teachings on religious law that has long served as a binding force across the Jewish diaspora. Yet these teachings are far from a fossilised set of regulations. Rather, the Talmud presents an evolving framework for debating how Jewish laws should be interpreted and applied in a changing world. Its spirit of inquiry has survived precisely because the views of the sages have continually been questioned and reinterpreted, keeping the tradition of argument alive. This tradition, howerer, is not confined to religious texts or observant communities. The novels examined in Women About Women draw upon the talmudic mode of discourse – even when they depict secular milieus – suggesting that the influence of the Book extends beyond its religious origins.
