The Chinese zodiac animals in proverbs

Proverbs are a precious cultural treasure preserved and transmitted orally across generations. Studying Chinese proverbs not only safeguards this heritage but also offers valuable insight into China’s history, culture, and society. This book aims to reconstruct the Chinese view of animals as reflected in proverbs—particularly those corresponding to the animals of the Chinese zodiac—revealing how linguistic expressions encode layers of cultural symbolism and collective experience. Following the methodology of the theory of linguistic worldview, the work provides ethnolinguistic descriptions of the connotations of the animals and meanings of animal-related proverbs. In doing so, it seeks to recreate the world as perceived by speakers of Chinese, shedding light on the cultural imagination and values underlying their language.

By integrating insights from mythology, archaeology, and traditional culture, this study goes beyond linguistics alone, offering a culturally grounded interpretation of Chinese metaphorical thinking. Understanding these proverbs can thus contribute to overcoming barriers in intercultural communication and to a deeper appreciation of how language reflects the human relationship with the natural and symbolic world.
