The twentieth century was one of immense social and political change. The verymeaning of the political and constitutional project that began with the Age ofRevo lutions that attempted to move toward liberalism, the rule of law, anddemocracy was seriously challenged by two World Wars and a half-century oftotalitarianism behind the Iron Curtain. Though the Soviet Union fell, challenges to aworld order based on laws and rules unfortunately still persist, as countries likeRussia, China, and Iran continuously try to undermine principles of nationalsovereignty, indi vidual liberty, good government based on constitutions that limit thepower of the state, and peaceful trade. The task to defend and uphold its freedomand institutions falls to each and every generation, and this volume hopes tocontribute to such attempts by adding in more and less well-known voices fromEastern Europe, espe cially comparing the contributions of the Anglo-American andPolish legal tradi tions.
